Chicano tattoo lettering is a bold, flowing script style that grew out of 1960s–70s Chicano art and pachuco culture in the American West — heavy downstrokes, tall capitals and dramatic shadows, traditionally inked single-needle in black and grey. It remains the classic choice for names and homage phrases.
Names, dates, and short homage phrases read best — the bold downstrokes keep them legible at arm's length. Chest and upper-arm placements suit the wide swashes; smaller spots call for simplified versions.
Compared with cursive lettering, Chicano script is heavier and more angular, with stronger shading; cursive stays light and rounded. Against Old English blackletter, Chicano keeps a script's flow where blackletter is dense and rigid.
The preview above is a font rendering, not a stencil file — that's true for every generator. Bring a transparent PNG or a screenshot of 2–3 styles you like; your artist redraws the lettering at true size before stenciling.
